AWS - Storage Gateway
A storage gateway is a device (logical or physical) that provides access to cloud based storage for on premises devices. The AWS Storage Gateway is a VM that can be downloaded and installed in the datacentre. It then provides a link for on premises devices to S3 or Glacier objects.
The types of VM supported are:
- VMWare
- Hyper-V
- AWS EC2
There are 4 types of usage:
- File Gateway - NFS gateway
- Gateway Stored Volumes - data kept on site but copied asynchronously to S3 using snapshots. Uses iSCSI so block access
- Gateway Cached Volumes - most frequently accessed data is kept locally, the rest is moved to S3. Uses iSCSI again. The cache can be up to 32TB.
- Gateway Virtual Tape Library - virtual tape devices backed by S3 or Glacier. This support Netbackup, etc
Once in S3, Lifecycles can be used to tier the objects between S3, S3 IA or Glacier
